for those of you who are close to me, you know WNC is my home. my immediate and extended family has had homes in gerton, marshall, and asheville. I moved back from pdx in 2022 to be closer to them. I spent every school break I had in NC, spending countless hours in places that have now been wiped off the face of the planet. Eli has lived in NC his whole life and owns our house there. it's home for us.
9/27/24 was the most traumatic day of my life, it's hard to put into words what we experienced and how it has deeply the trajectory of our lives have been affected.
it’s been four months since hurricane helene, but the work is far from over.
Beloved Asheville (www.belovedasheville.com) is on the ground rebuilding Asheville & Swannanoah, helping people pay rent, housing people, distributing heaters to keep people warm. They are reaching people who have trouble navigating an incredibly unfriendly system, and who don't have access to an internet audience of any sort for help. Government assistance hasn't showed up for most. Beloved Asheville is really doing the work.
the destruction to WNC is nothing short of unfathomable, and like I said months ago this is going to be an incredibly long road of work ahead.
I think about WNC all day every day. My heart is not going to ever fully heal from this.
